Why is this program necessary?
Human rights defenders in Latin America and the Caribbean face high levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and burnout due to work overload and constant exposure to structural challenges. These factors affect not only their mental health but also the sustainability of the work carried out by civil society and community organizations.
Collective Heartbeat emerges as an innovative response: a ten-month psychoeducational program designed to strengthen the emotional and collective well-being of human rights defenders in the Dominican Republic.
What is Collective Heartbeat?
It is a digital psychoeducational program implemented by COSALUME and Integrativa Online DVCN, with the support of American Jewish World Service (AJWS) for the Colectivo Salud Mental RD. It uses WhatsApp messaging to deliver weekly content on self-care, stress management, emotional resilience, mutual support, and sense of purpose.
Key Features
- Duration of the first phase: five months (July – November 2025)
- Format: weekly messages with reflections and practical exercises. Participants also have the option to receive individual psychosocial support provided by psychologists specialized in different areas (cognitive-behavioral psychology, family therapy, trauma).
- Approach: evidence-based psychosocial strategies adapted to the cultural context.
Program Structure
Each month focuses on a key theme for emotional care:
- Conscious self-care: recognizing that caring for oneself is not selfishness but resistance.
- Stress Management: Strategies to reduce tension and prevent exhaustion.
- Emotional resilience: tools to regulate emotions in adverse contexts.
- Mutual support and care networks: building solidarity and trust circles.
- Sense of mission and purpose: connecting with the deep motivation behind human rights advocacy.
Expected Outcomes
Based on evaluations of global psychoeducational programs, participants are expected to:
- Enhance their perceived self-efficacy in managing emotions and stress.
- Significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and perceived stress (similar programs have shown a 15% to 30% reduction in stress levels).
- Strengthen social support networks, increasing the sense of connection and belonging.
- Develop greater awareness of self-care as a political and community practice.
- Prevent burnout by integrating simple self-care routines and healthy boundaries.
These impacts align with findings from digital psychoeducational interventions that demonstrate effectiveness in improving emotional well-being among populations exposed to chronic stress (Heber et al., 2017; WHO, 2022).
Why is it innovative?
- Accessibility: reaches people in urban and rural areas without relying on high-speed internet.
- Simplicity: short, practical, and culturally relevant messages.
- Sustainability: promotes small, behavioral changes that can be maintained over time.
Conclusion
The results of Collective Heartbeat will be systematized to evaluate the program’s quality, sustainability, and scalability, as well as to extract lessons that will improve the second phase of the program and future psychosocial interventions aimed at human rights defenders. This information will be crucial in designing strategies that ensure a lasting and adaptable impact across various contexts.
